When it's ready and they want it done, get it done
He signed on Thursday
I've done a lot of closings. This is the one I think about.
We were near the finish on a deal, documents ready, and my client, an older gentleman, sat down and signed his closing papers. We wrapped up, said our goodbyes, an ordinary afternoon.
He passed away the next day.
It reframed the whole business for me. We spend so much time treating these deals like they'll always be there to get to next week. Sign it later. Circle back after the holidays. Wait for a cleaner moment.
Sometimes there isn't a next week.
What to take from it
The professional lesson is real. When a deal is ready and your client wants it done, get it done. Execution isn't paperwork for its own sake, it's making sure a person's decision actually counts while it can. Estates, heirs, and timing get complicated fast, and "we were going to sign next week" is not a sentence you want to say to a family. The human lesson stuck harder. Do the work like it matters, because for the person across the table, it does.
